IDC revealed Q2 2013 market share numbers for mobile devices and unsurprisingly, Android came out on top with a staggering 79.3% market share more than half of which (62.5%) was made up between Samsung, LG, ZTE and Huawei. Apple was number 2 with an increase of shipments from 26m to 31.2m which gave it a market share of 13.2%- down from last year’s 16.2% for the same quarter.
The biggest gainer was Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform and Nokia is surely to be thanked for that with it’s 80% share in that space. Jumping from 4.9m units to 8.7m units, Microsoft’s OS took a 3.7% market share at the expense of BlackBerry that fell from 7.7m units to 6.8m units. Things aren’t so bad for BlackBerry though as IDC points out that they have shown progress with their BB10 devices.
